Building Planning

   Mission Impacts On Building Requirements

You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him, and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and cleave to him. --Deuteronomy 13:4

The first thing a congregation contemplating a building program needs to do is study the congregation's mission and program and their implications for building requirements. It is applicable for existing congregations seeking to evaluate their existing building and location as well as new congregations planning a first unit and master plan.

First Step

Before contemplating a building program, congregations are strongly encouraged to complete a ministry plan. Church Extension offers Claiming God's Vision, a congregationally directed process that emphasizes prayer, the use of Scripture and the importance of discerning God's will for a congregation in setting ministry priority goals. Claiming God's Vision is offered as a tool with many facets.

When Should the Building Planning Process Begin?

The Building Planning process is most helpful before the congregation undertakes any major building project. Building Planning Workbooks that can be used to guide the process are available from Church Extension. The complete process is detailed in the workbook.
